Alabama was known for that. Now, many teams have alternate uniforms, this aspect of the sport.

Many players and teams are just numbers on the helmet, so they look like a real team, as their agreement with socks or gloves. It is also a little more than a fashion statement they want to be fashionable.
Most of the time the teams play with "Throwback" uniforms for at least 1 game per year. Types of uniform / styles that were used decades ago. I like it. Michigan City, and colors has not changed since the days of leather helmets that do not change, has been around.
Perhaps too many players lose their helmets?
